John F. Clapper

West Point, 1969

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John W. Harre, DDS on October 12, 2025:

After the "man in the red sash", John was one of first people I met at West Point. We were in the same Beast squad and, along with Mike Maasberg, we were Beast roommates. The three of us had no prior military experience so it was quite an adjustment. John's quiet, confident demeanor, and faith, were a factor in our getting through Beast!

I was grateful to also have John as one of my roommates for Plebe year. I could not have had a better roommate - it had to be Divine intervention. The next year, with the reorganization of the Corp, John went to H-3 and our contact was limited.

I was so glad that John, Mike and I were able to get together at the 50th Reunion. We joked that 54 years before we could not even imagine getting through Beast. It turned out to be my the last time with John, one I will always treasure.

Becky and I want to express our heartfelt condolences to Cindy and the children; John's calm demeanor and faith were an example for all of us. He will be missed.
