Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sgt Hana Romer on November 5, 2011:

When my husband and I (both of us Marines) bought our first home, we didn't expect to be living 2 houses down from a true war hero. We would have never known though if I wasn't nosy and decided to google Colonel Stanley Dzuiban's name and realized this man was a hero! He was the most humble guy I've ever met. He wasn't the type of old vet who talked your ear off about the "war" and what they had seen. That's how we knew he was real. He rarely talked about his service, but my husband and I both knew what a true hero he was.

When my husband deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, Stan frequently checked on me to see how I was doing and would always ask how Nick was doing and if I had heard from him yet.

We invited him over to a bbq one evening with all of our friends (mostly Marines). I introduced him as a survivor of THREE wars, and all the Marines just wanted to hear his stories. He didn't tell us anything though. He just told us that it was about us now and yelled "Semper Fi" and "Oorah" to us.

The week before Stan passed, my husband, our 2 year old daughter, and I went to go visit him at the hospital. He looked absolutely delighted that we had come to see him and again bragged to the doctor and the nurse that we were both Marines. The last words he told us were "Semper Fi".

Stan, I am honored that I got to know you and I wish that my daughter was old enough to really know just how amazing of a man you are...
