Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Cpl. Kyle McNally on November 8, 2011:

I'm writing this from my iPhone, sitting on my cot in a tent in the Mojave desert, where I am participating in my unit's final training exercise before we deploy to Afghanistan. I think in a lot of ways I am here because of Uncle Stan. I have never met anyone who has matched his caliber - even in "the greatest generation" im sure he was a rarity. I did not know him as well as I would've liked - or maybe as well as I should have - but I do know that he was a man who lived his life by an unwavering set of morals and personal principles. I wish I had one ounce of his discipline. I will emulate his modesty - I never knew he fought in so many theaters. I never knew he had a purple heart. But I asked him about the war every time I saw him. I will emulate his fortitude. Adversity or fear were never issues for him. I could only hope to emulate his intelligence. Everything else I cannot put into words, but just know, Uncle Stan, that I am forever grateful, because you showed me just how far a man with courage, passion and determination can go.

Semper Fi!
