Charles James Simmons

West Point, 1946

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lewis Sorley on May 14, 2014:

I first met Charles Simmons in a section room at West Point. He was then Captain Simmons, a Social Sciences instructor, and I was Cadet Sorley. Even at that early stage in my military life it was clear to me that Charles Simmons was an exceptional officer and man. His intellect was matched by his obvious integrity, his commitment to his profession, and his skill at mentoring young cadets.

In later years, of course, Charles Simmons rose to very high rank and responsibility. Gratifyingly, he retained the attractive traits of personal modesty and ability to interact with younger and more junior colleagues that had set him apart in an earlier day. It was a rare privilege to have come under the influence of this splendid officer. May he rest in peace.
