Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jim Carbine on February 25, 2011:

To Gene, Genie, the boys and grandchildren, I wish to express my condolences to you for the loss of your husband, father and grandfather.

For me I did not have the opportunity to say goodbye - his departure was so unexpected that it took us all by surprise. Despite being WP classmates I really did not know Cal until he he helped me out by being a member on the Class Gift Committee in 2004. For the next two years we had numerous meetings and Cal was extremely helpful as we worked our way through the various problems that arose. After all, he was Class President for our 50th Reunion where we gave the largest gift, up to that time, to the Academy of $1.32 million. And it is fitting that we will have our first night's "welcoming party" for this next Reunion in the Class' gift of The Great Hall in Herbert Hall and to be sure there will be many toasts to Cal as we cherish his memory and life's work.

To pick one thing about him I feel it shows his wonderful Class spirit and love for WP when we were unable to have anyone come forward in 2006 to accept a five year tour as the new Class President after the 60th. Even though he had served the Class well for the 50th he willingly volunteered to take over the reins "one more time" and the 65th will be a tribute to his thoughtfulness and knowledge of people's desires, as alumni, to honor their "alma mater" in a grand fashion.

Our prayers are with him and the family at this time. Jim
