When I joined "B" Company 26th Infantry Regiment in Grafenwohr, Germany in the summer of 1947 as a "wet behind the ears" 2d LT my tent mate and fellow platoon leader was Cal Benedict. I quickly recognized that Cal was a "poster boy" of how a new lieutenant should look and behave. This experience provided a very important beginning to my budding career and, for over 60 years I have been very grateful for the role model Cal provided. It has served me well for my entire subsequent life. Many times during the past six decades Mary and I have had the pleasure of reuninting with Cal and Gene and have looked forward to each occasionn. Cal will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Mary joins me in sending our fond best wishes to the entire Benedict family, Dave Hunter |
