Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jerome Lewis on November 4, 2004:

John Armstrong was ever present at our almost-monthly WPSSV meetings. Usually, Jack and I were the only old grads at the small, business meetings of recent years. He wanted to return to the old format of guest speakers every other month. It was just enough to do Founders Day, and the Army-Navy Game Party we explained. He was always there for an invocation which we use to have at our bi-monthly meetings, and they were the best. I had the privilege of sitting with him on at least two Founders Day dinners, and just sharing thoughts with him. When he spotted a picture of me on display at FD 2000, he asked about my Army Track background. It seems he also ran for Army, at the 440 distance as I recall. When I announced I was going on the Plebe Hike / Grad MarchBack (Aug 2004), he asked for a report. Unfortunately, I did not give him one after the hike, but had sent him some from previous years. It is something he would have loved to do, but probably knew better than to do an overnight 15 mile hike with the cadets.... He spoke proudly of his sons, both graduates, and was a great role model for the rest of us in Silicon Valley.
