Be Thou At Peace

Posted by MG John C. (Jack) McWhorter, Jr. on May 4, 2000:

Ed and I were really good friends in B2 Company. Many an afternoon when we had free time before supper, we would run in the hills behind Michie Stadium. I don't think we called it jogging then. We were neither of us verbose-we just enjoyed each other's company.
The next time I saw Ed after graduation was in MA where I was going to grad school and he was home on leave. Then in 1952, during the Korean War, I visited him at his Regimental CP where he was in the S-3 Section. We agreed I would come back for another visit in a few weeks. When arrived, I learned he had been wounded leading a rescue mission and evacuated. We next met at the 10th Reunion.
For some reason our paths did not cross again. In 1971, I was working for another B2 classmate, Bert David. Bert called me in Pusan from Seoul to inform me that Ed had been killed in Vietnam. I was stunned and saddened. I lost a good friend; the Army lost a great soldier. How I wish that somehow we could have seen more of each other after graduation.
