Having known Ray for many years, I am saddened by the news of his death. We both originated in southern Illinois, in fact Ray was appointed to USMA by a good friend of my mother's. Next in the 1959-62 years we were Tactical Officers together at the Academy where he was well recognized as an outstanding leader who possessed a warm personality. We also knew his family during this assignment as one of his sons was taught by my wife in the elementary school. During the period 1963-64 we both served in an Army infantry division in South Korean as battalion commanders. Ray commanded with great skill and superior results which I remember being a competitor. In the Viet Nam War I heard many excellent reports about Ray's distinguished service in the 173d Airborne Brigade and with CORDS in Bien Hoa under the leadership of Mr. John Vann.
