Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert Hertel on September 23, 2010:

I served under Ray Ochs on four separate occasions. The first was as his deputy when he was Secretary of the Infantry School at Fort Benning in '67-'68. The second occasion was as one of his battalion commanders when he was commander of the 173rd Abn Bde in Vietnam in '70. The third time was as one of his staff officers when he commanded the Army Test & Evaluation Agency at Fort Belvoir in "74. Finally, I served under him as 1st COSCOM cdr when he was Deputy 18th ABN Corps Cmdr at Fort Bragg in '78, and I was honored to be present at his retirement ceremony.

In addition to being a close and dear friend, Ray Ochs was one of the finest leaders I have ever known. Astute and analytical, he always had a superb grasp of the situation, and in all the time I knew him, I never once saw him angry or upset. All the officers who worked for him admired and respected him. His integrity was beyond question.

My family offers our deepest condolences to the Ochs family and we join them in mourning his passing.
