Harry A. Griffith

West Point, 1949

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Francis A Wolak on August 13, 2003:

My first awareness of Harry was at the sizing formation for companies. An upper classman from G-1 would tell Harry to go to his room and insert white belts into his shoes. When he returned an
upper classman from H-1 told him to go to his room and remove the belts. This cycle went on for about three go-arounds. I don't know how it stopped and Harry was assigned to G-1.
After graduation Harry, Ken McIntyre, and I used my brand new 1949 Ford to travel cross-country to Camp Stoneman and shipment to the Far East. Along the way we picked up Gil Kirby in Shelby , Montana
where we came to know what "gumbo" was. (super MUD).
Harry"suggested" a route that included the major dams
along the Columbia. He also looked at an invitation to Turner Croonquist's wedding and figured if we drove day and night we could make it.We did make the reception and started on a whirl-wind social life in San Francisco, culminating in the only dinner
I was served by a Butler with all the trimmings. The host was the father of a young lady that Harry impressed. We nicknamed her "Miss Ingot" because her father was the CEO of Inland Steel. Roger Kelly
was our social arranger. We had the most memorable time in San Francisco, thanks to Roger and the Croonquist reception.
Roger contracted encephalitis soon after he came to Korea and died from the disease.
I met Harry again in Korea and during one of our discussions he showed me a notebook whichhe said he is using to document the wrongs he is observing.
My memory after 55 years is hazy, but I recall the visits to Boonton NJ which was close tomy home in Clifton NJ. I also vaguely remember that Harry's mother came from a Polish background and we joked about that.
The next contact came in Alaska when we were assigned to the District. Harry went north to the post near Fairbanks. The name eludes me but Harry's tour through the tunnels is still with me. Enough for now . Suffice to say the tributes about Harry by his classmates are well-deserved. My most impressive was his continuous action- always something moving ,always planning, never stagnant.
An admirer from day one. Frank
