Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Hammack on November 17, 2003:

On July 16,2003, our great First Captain, Harry, left us for a new assignment. I was in California on a family vacation with my children, and grandchildren, and I was unable to attend Harry's Memorial Services. It was difficult to access a computer while away, so I was unable to participate in the written honors and tributes showered on Harry.

He was a MAN among MEN! He was what we all aspire to be. A devoted husband, a loving Father, a true friend and a great leader.

Due to his illness, Harry's exceptional leadership ability was restricted early on during his term as Vice Chairman of the AOG. Here is a little known fact about Harry. One event which showcases his influence both at West Point and within the U.S. Army and needs to be shared with our Class. Bill Raiford, Chairman of the West Point Bicentennial Celebration, desired to have an exhibition at the Smithsonian to feature West Point's 200 years of history. At the initial meeting with the Smithsonian staff, it became apparent that the cost far exceeded the AOG's financial capability. I discussed the matter with Harry, and he arranged a luncheon meeting with LTG Ted Stroup, the Vice President of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), and solicited AUSA's financial support. The rest is history. Gen. Sullivan and LTG Stroup grabbed the ball, and the outcome is a series of magnificent Army and West Point Bicentennial displays at the Smithsonian. This could have been Harry's last service to West Point.
