Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Susan Lee Hindman on December 22, 2011:

I had the extreme and greatest privilege to lead my Dad LTC Edward Roy Hindman, Sr., U.S. Army, Retired, in the sinner's prayer when he accepted our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into his heart and life. I also baptized him in water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit at the Mount Vernon Hospital where he lay extremely sick two and a half days before he departed from this earth to go up into heaven forevermore. My Dad's conversion story is very similar to the one found recorded in the New Testament Book of Acts in chapters 9, 22 and 26. Rabbi Saul of Tarsus was traveling on the Damascus Road to go and persecute Christians and to throw them in prison for their faith and belief in Jesus Christ the Messiah. Jesus called out to Saul from a great light from heaven which exceeded the Sun and which blinded him and said, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" Saul replied after falling to the ground, "Who art thou Lord?" The Lord said to Saul, "I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest." It was then that Saul received the revelation that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. He was converted instantly and his name was later changed to Paul who became the greatest Apostle who wrote the majority of the New Testament.

When Dad fell and broke his left hip in June 2001, he slowly began to see The Light of the world who is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Dad began to see his need for Christ and got more and more convicted of his sins as time went on. I continued to pray and intercede for him and to read portions of the Bible to him when I visited him for the next four plus years. It was the greatest thing of my life to lead my own precious Dad in the sinner's prayer in 2005 and then to see his arm reach up in the hospital room to me having the greatest desire of his heart to be restored again someday in heaven with his loving family, my Mom, my brother and me. I wish to dedicate Dad's conversion to Jesus by His atoning cleansing blood and to God's great love and saving power by reciting the words of the most greatly beloved Christian hymn of all time, Amazing Grace. It was written by the former slave trader who was converted and became the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725--1807), and was published in 1779. Stanza six is attributed to John P. Rees.

AMAZING GRACE

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

I Timothy 1:12-17 says in the words of Paul the Apostle,
"And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen."

With much peace and love in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forever, yours,
