Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Susan Lee Hindman on December 21, 2011:
My Dad LTC Edward Roy Hindman, Sr., USA, Retired, USMA Class of 1949, is an everlasting witness to the grace of God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I remember hearing his baritone voice sing hymns in Church growing up as a child where we attended U.S. Army military post Chapels and then the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches upon his retirement. One of the great old favorite hymns of the Church has a military theme which is Am I A Soldier of the Cross that was written by English Pastor Isaac Watts. He had prepared a sermon about spiritual warfare in 1721 which was based on the Scripture passage from I Corinthians 16:13, "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong." Pastor Watts wrote the hymn Am I a Soldier of the Cross? to accompany his sermon. The music that accompanies the lyrics that are published in hymnals was written in 1762 by Thomas A. Arne and was then arranged by Ralph Harrison in 1784. This hymn of the Church is written here for your edification and sanctification.
Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
Am I a soldier of the cross, A follower of the Lamb, And shall I fear to own His cause, Or blush to speak His Name?
Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize, And sailed through bloody seas?
Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood? Is this vile world a friend to grace, To help me on to God?
Sure I must fight if I would reign; Increase my courage, Lord. I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy Word.
Thy saints in all this glorious war Shall conquer, though they die; They see the triumph from afar, By faith's discerning eye.
When that illustrious day shall rise, And all Thy armies shine In robes of victory through skies, The glory shall be Thine.
I Timothy 1:18-20 says, "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare."
With great love in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
