Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Susan Lee Hindman on May 22, 2015:

My Dad drove my Mom with my brother and me to a week long summer Presbyterian Church camp at Camp Happy Valley in Port Deposit, MD, when I was 10, 11 and 12 years old. I learned in those early formative years about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and many of the well known popular hymns of the hymns of the Church. This fun early childhood Christian education has stayed with me all of my life. I got to know God in those meetings and out in the countryside and felt his loving presence. The camp counselors used to play a game of hide and seek by hiding down in the valley among the trees. Then when the set waiting time was up, they would joyfully dart out and up the hillside and run as fast as they could to touch the large wooden cross where they were safe. I chased one particular camp counselor up the hill to try to tag him and to take him out of the race. He was much too tall, lean and fast for me and I could not catch him. It taught me a lesson that we are to take safe refuge beneath the cross of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior where we find rest for our thirsty souls and spirits. Run to Jesus! For only He can give us everlasting life and joy since He is the giver of the water of life and Jesus defeats all of our foes.

The great Christian hymn, Faith of Our Fathers, was written by Frederick W. Faber in 1849 and the tune was composed by Catherine Hemy. I quote it here for your edification and inspiration.

FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

Faith of our fathers, living still,
In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!

Refrain:
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto thee;
And through the truth that comes from God,
We all shall then be truly free.

Refrain:
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.

Refrain:
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

II Corinthians 5:20, Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Hebrews 11:6-16, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country,
dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Hebrews 12:1-2, Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily best us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Happy Memorial Day!

With much love in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the Messiah forever!
