He was my commander. He was my mentor. He was my friend. Whenever I would make a mistake -- which was often -- he quietly told me (or showed me) how to do better next time. I was his first aide-de-camp, and no doubt his worst. But he was patient, teaching and leading, so that eventually I became a fairly good officer. He was my friend, and our Army and our nation has lost a great soldier. |
