Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom Aeillo on April 1, 2016:

I had the great honor of working with Don when I was stationed at Headquarters, Army Materiel Command in the early 1990s.

He took me under his wing, I suspect, because he had looked me up in "The Register" and refused to believe that "modern" graduates were listed alphabetically rather of in order of class standing. So he always teased me about being number 5 in my class (nothing further from the truth!).

Don was one of the most interesting people I've ever met, with a wonderful low-key sense of humour, a vast store of knowledge about seemingly everything, and a love of his family and his Army.

Don was a story-teller, and I find myself still quoting him, or re-telling his stories, even today, over 20 years later.

It is my way of passing on his wit and wisdom to the next generation of leaders. In fact, I found myself today looking Don up on the internet entirely because one of my young co-workers just quoted back to me a Don Gower quote!

That is a great tribute to a wonderful man, a superb leader, and proud son of West Point. Be thou at peace, Don.
