EUGENE MARDER - Army Officer
Eugene Marder, 69, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and real estate broker, died of brain cancer May 20 at his home in Arlington. He had lived in Arlington since 1965.
Mr. Marder served in the Army for 25 years. He retired in 1969 from the Pentagon, where he was a management adviser and acting chief of the management, education and training division in the office of the Army comptroller.
He was a real estate broker after leaving the Army and taught real estate courses in the Arlington adult education program for 20 years.
Mr. Marder was born in Philadelphia and raised in East Orange, N.J. He served as a paratrooper during World War II and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1949.
After serving in the Air Force for a year, he rejoined the Army and served in the Korean War in Korea. He later was assigned to France and Germany and served as an operations officer in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
He received a master's degree in business from Ohio State University and was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College. He taught leadership and psychology courses at West Point from 1960 to 1964, and he was a contributor to the textbook "Leadership in the Service."
He sold real estate in Northern Virginia for Holley Realty, Hanlon Associates and Re/Max Properties of Distinction.
His military decorations included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and two Army Commendation Medals.
Mr. Marder was a member of the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors and its Million Dollar Club, the Arlington County Chamber of Commerce, the Optimist Club of Arlington, the Retired Officers Association and Ducks Unlimited. He was treasurer of Temple Rodef Shalom in Arlington.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Margaret Davies Marder of Arlington; three children, Mark Davies Marder of Weston, Mass., Adam Samuel Marder of Falls Church and Rachel Heather Marder of Arlington; and four grandchildren.
