Margaret D. Marder
Margaret D. Marder, 89, died at the Sylvestery at Vinson Hall, McLean, Virginia of natural causes on April 1, 2016. Margaret grew up on a family farm in upstate New York. Her father was an apple farmer and a former county agricultural agent. Her grandmother was a doctor and her mother was a nurse. Her grandfather was a well-known American artist who organized the Armory Show of 1913. She graduated from High School in a class of 35 and later graduated from Middlebury College. While she was in college, she was vice president of the Women Student Body during her junior year and she was president of her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. After college, she worked in New York City, commuting daily on the train, at an advertising agency and later as a telephone operator for AT&T. She married Lt. Eugene Marder, USMA '49, in October 1949 in Texas and moved with him through decades of US Army assignments, except of course, multiple hardship assignments in Korea and Vietnam. Her college Spanish was just enough to aid her in learning French while the family was stationed in France. She learned German from her mother growing up, and it was enough to be able to communicate while stationed in Germany. Margaret and Eugene made their last move to Virginia towards the end of Eugene's Army career and resided there until Margaret moved to Vinson Hall after Eugene's death. She was active in numerous civic duties over the years, including the Arlington County Hearing Impaired Program and Women's Optimist Club of Arlington. Margaret also served at her local polling station for over 20 years before moving to McLean. In addition to Margaret's civic activities, she had many other hobbies and activities she participated in. She won an award for needlepoint at Woodlawn Plantation. Margaret was an avid gardener and cook. She kept an extensive herb garden at home. After being stationed in France, her cooking leaned towards healthy and fresh ingredients long before it became fashionable. While Eugene continued his career as a real estate agent, Margaret also earned her real estate license. Margaret also ran a second mortgage business to help Eugene's clients purchase the homes they wanted. Margaret is survived by her three children, Mark, Adam and Rachel, and their spouses, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Margaret is also survived by her two sisters-in-law and by many nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be held at Vinson Hall on April 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the chapel. There will be a reception afterwards after the services at Vinson Hall. Margaret will join Eugene at Arlington National Cemetery. Services to be arranged at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association; P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 in the name of Margaret Marder.
