Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ira Martin on January 22, 2008:

Mr. Bunn was significant in my life. He was positive in his encouragement to me in my teen years, when my own family life was very difficult. Mr. Bunn shared with me his own personal military history, and today I use those revelations in my own government service.

Life is unkind in many ways, and I never saw him give up. Today, to this day, I remember his directness: A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins. The last time I saw Mr. Bunn was in 1983, when I was home on leave from the Navy. In my mind's eye, Mr. Bunn is forever focused and facing life, determined to overcome whatever difficulty and unkindness life threw at him.

I use his war stories when mentoring younger analysts, using examples from his service in the Korean Conflict as warnings not to be constrained by conventional thinking and to be good students of military history and military science. Mr. Bunn's reach into the lives of others has far exceeded what expectation he may have had when we talked.

I am thankful to God for the short years I had with Mr. Bunn when I was a teenager. God Bless him.
