Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Hugh Hoffman, '48 on April 13, 2008:

I had known Jerry Paden casually as a Cadet at West Point. Jerry was a Forward Observer with the 61st FA Battalion when he linked up with "C" Company, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Infantry)in Auguat of 1950 while the Company was on the Naktong River. Jerry immediately began plotting artillery concentrations to support the company. Shortly thereafter we we were moved to a position astride the Waegwan-Pusan Highway. It was while here that we were advised of the coming break out of the Pusan Perimeter. Our mission was to attack up the hills east of the Highway. On the morning of 18 September we began our movement. The company command group moved up a dry stream gully and were paused to get a view of our route when they were hit by enemy mortar fire. It was then that Jerry was wounded as well as both of his men in the FO party and the "C" Co. commander. All were evacuated. Jerry subsequently lost his life while enroute to additional medical care in Japan. In this short time Jerry had demonstrated all the potenial a young officer should have for success.
