Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brad McGowan on August 19, 2018:

I first met the General when I was a young private in 1976 with the 326th Engineers, 101st ABN Div. I was in the mess hall right behind him standing in line for breakfast, he turned handed me his tray and told me to go ahead of him, a One Star General handing me his tray we had a nice visit. Two years later 1978, I was in Tokyo headed home from Korea when I saw him at the airport, I went up to him and he was so cordial to me an E5 then. I told him of the mess hall meeting of and of how I was trying to get back to the 101st he advised me to sign in at Campbell and go see BG Kastner informing the BG that General Mackmull had told me to do this. I did all this and BG Kastner tried his hardest to get me reassigned but the Army would not let me stay. General Mackmull truly cared about the everyday soldier and I will always fondly remember crossing paths with him. RIP General and I will see you some day on the other side.
