Be Thou At Peace

Posted by LTC (Ret) Ken Hinkle on March 16, 2012:

Two of the best years of my life I spent at MG Mackmull's side as his aide at USAJFKCENMA. The general and Mrs Mack often introduced me as their "adopted son", and I was asked several times if it was true. My whole family felt "adopted" by the Mackmull family and it was a sad day when we moved on to another job. He was truly a wonderful man and one hell of a general. He made everyone, regardless of rank or position in life, feel important and at ease with him.

I remember an occasion when we were travelling around Ft Bragg in his open Jeep when we saw some troops across a parking lot. The general asked if they were our guys (Special Forces) or 82d guys. Before I could answer, the soldiers recognized the Jeep and MG Mackmull and immediately started waving. This was followed quickly by a snap to attention and crisp salute. I told the General "They're ours, Sir".

I will carry the memories of those years with me forever. Sir, it was a deep honor and privilege to have been your aide. God bless you and all the Mackmull family.
