Be Thou At Peace

Posted by T.J. on September 9, 2011:

I knew Jack V. MackMull as CG of the 101st Airborne Division. I was an officer in one of his companies. A division CG is a tough job, but Jack not only did that job well, but earned the admiration of his men in the process; something which is infinitely harder to accomplish. There was a common soldier quality in Jack I've never seen in other generals. He drove his own staff car which wasn't always washed. He showed up at company and battalion social functions and everyone was glad to see him instead of being terrified. He trusted his people, and his people trusted him. Jack didn't lead by fear; his style was that no one wanted to disappoint him. He was in my Air Assault school class; broke his leg. At his Hail and Farewell we made certain that he got his wings anyway. I am sorry to see you go, Sir... the world was a better place while you were here.
