Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William T. McNamara on July 6, 2011:

It was with sadness today (07-06-2011) when I was informed of General Pendleton's passing. My condolences to Anne and his entire family. The Army has lost one of the finest soldiers and instructors it ever had.

I served under Gen Pendleton when he commanded 1st COSCOM at Ft Bragg. I served in several staff positions for him and ended as his SOTI or G-3. I had recently branch transferred from Inf to QM and this was my first QM assignment. He was a demanding, but fair, taskmaster. He knew everyone's job in COSCOM better than we did. He knew how important the MISSION was and being the great teacher he was he simply wanted us to learn our jobs as well as he did and demanded nothing less.

He succeded.

For me, he was the finest instructer I ever had. I carried what I called "Elmerisms" with me and utilized them for the remainder of my army years and for my 29 years post army years as a Defense Contractor contributing to the welfare of our WARFIGHTERS.

I am honored to be one of his pupils and I owe my post army success in industry to him and his wise counsel.

Well done Sir--"Be Thou at Peace".
