Be Thou At Peace

Posted by H.A. "Spike" Flertzheim on February 25, 2013:

As bookends to the Corps, Glenn being in Company M-1, while I was in M-2, we became good friends while Academy classmates. Later, Glenn and I served together in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1967-68, where he commanded the 3rd Squadron of the 4th Cavalry while I commanded the Division's Combat Engineer Bn.

Glenn was known throughout the 25th Division as an audacious, brave, wise, and caring commander who achieved superior results while taking care of his men. During Tet 68, his Squadron rescued Ton Son Nhut airbase while it was under attack by the Viet Cong. Glenn was in the thick of the fight, earning the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery.

Even in those days, one could forecast that Glenn would achieve high rank as an outstanding officer. It was no surprise to me that he attained four star rank.

Later, I looked forward to seeing him every five years at our Class Reunions at West Point. Alas, no more will we renew old memories as we march side by side during the Alumni ceremonies.

Well done, Mr. 3/4 Cav - Be Thou at Peace.
