Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mike Prendergast on September 8, 2017:

Sandy & Hatsie were our neighbors in Austin, TX after he retired. Once we realized we had both been in the 82nd Abn, we had an immediate bond. Sandy had commanded the 82nd, and I had served as an EM in 2/505 for 2 yrs. Over the years as neighbors, we realized we had other things in common. He had attended the HS attached to the Univ. I graduated from; we both attended the same parish church, both of us had sons who were MPs; he was a graduate of the USMA and I had applied for an EM billet, but my enlistment expired before confirmation; both loved Army football; and I jokingly reminded him one day that "we both had two", which confused him until I explained that "Sandy, you had 2 stars, and I had 2 stripes", and I thought he'd never stop laughing. He certainly had a great sense of humor. Sandy attended the "Former 82nd Commanders" ceremony/parade annually, and he always returned with an 82nd-themed gift, be it a t-shirt, mug, cap, batch of wings/patch stickers, etc. He never really realized how much I appreciated his kindness as I continue to cherish those tokens of his friendship and consideration. But, that was Sandy, the man.

Sadly, Sandy and Hatsie moved to Sun City in Georgetown. We had limited contact after that until one time I solicited his support in getting a Color Guard from Camp Mabry to participate in a Memorial & plaque dedication on campus for a deceased classmate, a Chaplain-Colonel -- OIF. Sandy helped get that done, and for that, I'm forever grateful.
Unfortunately, we were not notified of Sandy's passing. I missed him when he moved away, and I dearly miss him now. Hatsie & Family, know that Sandy is in my prayers.
