Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Van Doubleday on January 7, 2010:

Today is 7 January 2010. I was exchanging e-mail with Gary Moss, also a friend of Vip's and he mentioned giving Vip half a toilet seat for his half-ass support of General Powers during Vip's farewell party on his retirement. There was a lot of other funny stuff too. I was there and that was about the last time I saw Vip except once later in San Antonio... unintentionally we just drifted apart, he and Shirley in SA, and me and my family in Phoenix. So, today, Gary and I decided to try and locate him. Well, you know what happened then. I bought Vip and Shirley's home when they retired, and I certainly remembered that he taught one of my daughters calligraphy, which she still practices today. I want anyone reading this to know that Vip was a true friend, a superb Air Force officer, a true gentleman of outstanding character, and a guy who was just great to be around...and I miss very much at just the thought.

To his family, please accept my most heartfelt regret that somehow I allowed us to lose the closeness that we enjoyed during those years, now so long ago, in the halls of the large, funny building in Washington. Best wishes, Van C. Doubleday, Maj Gen, USAF (Ret.)
