Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joe Ameel on December 24, 2011:

As a non-West Point graduate, but having gone through BIOC and Ranger School in 1955, I did not have the privilege of meeting Dave until posted to the Armor Advanced Course at Ft Knox, KY in 1960. From that day forward we served on many occasions in the same unit and had similar staff assignments, some of which were described by Carl McNair in his excellent eulogy. On one occasion we were both assigned command at the same time to the 7th US Cavalry. He to command the 2nd Squadron in Korea, I to the 3rd Squadron in Germany. In retirement we both continued to work on similar military projects and shared our experiences when appropriate.

Today (24 Dec 2011) I tried to make our annual Christmas phone call and he did not answer.

I consider it my good fortune to have known Dave for over 50 years. In my opinion he was a quick study that represented the best in those fortunate enough to be selected to attend the US Military Academy. Because of Dave and others like him, the class of 1955 is properly recognized as the Last Great Class.

GARRY OWEN Dave and God Bless.
