David Eastwood Wheeler

West Point, 1955

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Johnny Wells, USMA 1965 on February 1, 2024:

David was my mentor while we worked together in the Tampa office of Wagner-Hons-Englis (WHI), a construction consulting company specializing in dispute resolution and scheduling. He was a star man in the Class of 1955, which, with evident pride, he always referred to as "The Last Great Class". At MIT he studied nuclear engineering and was humbled by the academic challenges of that program. His extreme intelligence (which, at times, could be intimidating) was accompanied by a refined sense of humor that made him a pleasure to be around. For example, he once told me of his experience with his assignment officer in OPO after he graduated from MIT. Having been born and raised in the Orlando, FL area, he made it clear to OPO that it was of prime importance to him to be stationed "in the south". In accordance with his wishes, he said, "the Army sent me to the South Pole for two years".
