Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Alice Schow Bowman on June 9, 2005:

I want all to know that my father, Doc Schow, was a world-class dad! He loved his children dearly and overtly shared that love with us. He was an involved father in a time when it wasn't in vogue for fathers to change diapers, feed the children, bathe the children, etc. He was incredibly funny and as intelligent a person as could be. He was always kind to everyone in his life from his family, to his co workers to his subordinates to the bank tellers and the list goes on and on. Avidly interested in many, many things, he was the easiest person to buy a present for! I can't walk through a bookstore without still wanting to buy a book for him. He was my number one advocate in life and is sorely missed by all. Eccentric? Yes...but I am very proud to this day that he made me memorize (for $20.00) Lewis Carroll's poem of sheer nonsence, "The Jabberwocky." I can recite it to this day and am so pleased that I had a wacky enough father who enjoyed life enough to urge me to memorize something like that! Special thanks to Jack Doyle for making the Arlington ceremony (beneath a beautiful rainbow) a memory of lifetime. We feel such peace knowing that my dad is there and surrounded by many other good souls. Thanks also to Dave Wheeler and Jon Vanden Bosch for their support during this trying time. Finally, thank you to all of his classmates who showed up to the Arlington ceremony. It meant more than we can say. To you Daddy ("The Red Baron"), well done! You're in my constant thoughts and conversations and that will never change.
