Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Vern Pace on May 31, 2013:

Moody Echo Hayes. What a name - but what a guy! Eck and I roomed together during Beast Barracks in one of the old tower rooms located in the First Regiment. There was, in fact, a plaque on the wall stating that General Douglas Macarthur had occupied that room at one time.

Eck exemplified to me the diversity of the student body at West Point. I was from the far west; he from the deep south. It was interesting and fun comparing life-styles, colloquialisms, and other differences from our backgrounds.

We went our separate ways after Beast Barracks, both within our stay at the academy and our careers afterwards. However, our short but intense time together left me with the little doubt that Eck was the epitome of a true loyal southern gentleman.
