FRANCIS MARTIN GREENE Jr. - '55

No. 20218 [15 December 1933 - 12 June 1988]

Died at: East Johnsburg, N.Y.
Interred at: unknown

Francis Greene (aka Jerry; further known as Peachy) was a son of the brown shoe Army. He was born in Newburgh, NY to Francis Greene and Marcia (Wheelock) Greene. His father was Master of the Sword when Jerry entered West Point; a fact that frequently brought on the wrath of upper classmen. His answer to the question "What's your name, dumbsmack, and where do you come from?" often prompted a delay while the mental wheels turned followed by a loud "I've been waiting a long time to meet you." But, Jerry was a squared-away cadet and took it all in stride.

He went to Highland Falls High School for two years and finished at Deerfield Academy in MA. His congressional appointment came from the Hon. Katherine st. George, 29th Congressional District (NY). At West Point, Jerry was a hive in all things academic. His final class standing placed close to the upper ten percent. Athletically, he also did well, earning numerals in lacrosse as a plebe. He used his musical interests and talents participating in the Glee Club and on the Cadet Chapel choir. In the winter time, he was devoted to skiing. as reflected in his place in the Ski Club all four years. The Special Program Committee also drew his interest for three years. At branch drawing, Jerry stood up and said "Air Force" and received it. A fter four years as a fighter pilot, he resigned in 1959 with his marriage status still single. Jerry then attended Harvard University and received his MBA in 1961. He joined Brown Brothers Harriman and Company, a private commercial bank, a relationship which would last twenty-three years including becoming Manager in 1972. Two postings to London consumed nine of those years.

Jerry finally met his matrimonial Waterloo when he married Fayal Barnett on May 14, 1966 in New York City. A little over a year later, they were parents of twins; a daughter and a son. In 1984, he left Brown Brothers for Estabrook Capital Management, Inc. and became Executive Vice President in 1985. Jerry met well-earned success at every turn but, sadly, he passed away in mid-June 1988 only fifty-years old.

Be at peace.
