Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl McNair on August 19, 2011:

Had not seen Frank Donald during our careers since he served in the Air Force and I in the Army, but finally linked with him in my old hometown of Pensacola, FL, where Frank finally settled after retirement. I knew from our class roster that he was in the town and had worked with a retired friend there, but could not locate him at his last known address.

Sadly I learned from our classmates residing in Fort Walton that both Frank and his wife were living in a nursing home in the Pensacola suburbs. On my next visit in the early summer of 2010, I took a copy of our 50th Reunion Book and presented it to him, as we gripped hands across his hospital bed. Although it was difficult for him to speak and he did not recognize me, I shared greetings from the class and he fell off to sleep.

I then went to visit his wife down the hall, leaving a note from the class for their daughter who lived in upstate Alabama and looked in on them regularly. I know that our Air Force classmates residing in Fort Walton Beach also visited Frank from time to time and that the class remained in touch until he passed away soon thereafter.

May he rest in peace, having now "reached out and touched the face of God".

Grip Hands,

Carl McNair
Class of 1955
