Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick Prater on February 12, 2007:

Don Reid was one of a kind. I had the privilege of rooming with Don during second beast detail of our firstie year. He was one super guy and all Regular Army. The plebes in our platoon were all better off for his leadership--although they might not have thought so at the time. He was one that was very reluctant to see the admission of women into West Point. A case in point was at our 35th reunion when he was standing next to me with the Corps formed up in front of us on the plain waiting to pass in review. After the Brigade Commander called for the Battalions to come to attention, the quiet was broken with a very high pitched and shrill voice that was unmistakenly female calling her Battalion to attention. I sensed a great uneasiness in Don and all he said was "Oh my God!"

Don was an outstanding leader, a truly great person and a real credit to West Point. He will be sorely missed. Don, well done--be thou at peace.
