DECEMBER 6, 1929 - SEPTEMBER 13, 2012

LTC Ret, Lawrence (Larry) E. Stockett, 82, died Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Hospice of Wake County surrounded by his family. He was born December 6, 1929 in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1948. He enlisted in the US Army and attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Stewart Air Force Base, Newberg, New York. He entered the United States Military Academy in July 1951 and graduated in June 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Military Art and Engineering. He entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery. The Stocketts had many interesting assignments. In 1963 he was assigned to the University of Arizona to study nuclear engineering from which he graduated in 1965 with a Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering. While on active duty in the Army he served two tours in Vietnam and five years on the staff and faculty of the Command and General Staff College located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

In 1975, Larry retired from active duty in the Army and started his second career at the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) where he was the supervisor of a program devoted to preparing engineering design handbooks for the Department of Defense. He retired from RTI in 1997.

During his life, Larry had many interests outside of his employment. He was involved with the Boy Scouts from 1956 through 1979. He served in many capacities in scouting to include scout master. Larry is a graduate of the Boy Scouts Wood Badge Course, and was an assistant course director in a later course. He was a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.

In 1979, Larry joined the Raleigh Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. He served as the commander of the Raleigh Squadron and on many committees of the squadron. He became commander of District 27, which was composed of 16 squadrons within North Carolina. He served until his death on several committees of District 27. He also served on several committees at the national level of the United States Power Squadrons.

From 1975 until his death, Larry was a member of Benson Memorial United Methodist Church. He held several positions with the church to include: President of the Brightsiders Sunday School Class, Usher, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for three years, President of United Methodist Men, Chairman of the food collection for the poor at the North Carolina State Fair and Chairman of the Christmas Tree Sale.

Larry was a member of the Triangle Chapter of the Military Officer Association of America. Within the chapter he served as Second Vice President, newsletter editor and meeting coordinator.

Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kay Wilkins Stockett; four children and their spouses: Richard Stockett and his wife, Mary Louise of Raleigh; John Stockett of Raleigh; Kathryn Bailey and her husband, Scott of Raleigh; and Paul Stockett and his wife, Brandy of New Bern; four granddaughters and one grandson; brother, Col. Ret. Joe Stockett and his wife, Claudia of Las Vegas, NV; and two nieces, Marcie Howlett; and Harriett Wail.
