Be Thou At Peace

Posted by TOMMY WEST on November 17, 2009:

As I recall Demps and I met at Stewart Field. He was much older as I had only turned 18. And, as most kids of the day, I looked up to him. The two of us struggled thru West Point hoping just to graduate let alone wear stars (the smart guys).

As luck would have it, we ended up next to each other academically way down at the bottom, or near the bottom of our Class. As you remember branch/Air Force selections were made starting at the beginning of the Class standings so Damps and I had to wait to determine our fate.

By the time they got to us there was Infantry and ONE Air Force slot and, being one file above Dempsey, I got to choose first. Demps was really sweating me out to grasp his lifelong dream. It so happened that Army Aviation was in its infancy in the Army and also a choice for our Class. So I chose Infantry and to go to flight school with the Army. Dempsie was ecstatic and grateful. He did well and, as I knew he would, distinguished himself in the Air Force.

Now he rests with the heroes and has broken the endless bonds of space.

God speed Dempsie Davis. You have done well.

Tommy:)
