Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Floyd F. McGurk on February 19, 2001:

Captain Morelli:
This is Lt McGurk, who worked for you in the Opns Section, 44th Engr Group in Thailand in '64.

Sir, age and experience have lent some of us the humility and honesty to acknowledge that we could not be the kind of man you were; and that we did not accomplish what you did in your shortened life because we weren't your equal in spirit, in goodness, in intellect, in selflessness, in deed. Those of us who may have undeservedly survived longer than you did, ponder about the mystery of that. Capeche, Sir?

Please also know, that among the young men that some of us have guided, and continue to guide to this day; there may arise a few like you. That is not highly probable, to be sure. But, for our country and the Army, we shall always maintain our hopes about that.

May your wonderful spirit and sense of humor rest in eternal tranquility.

And, Sir, if your repose be interrupted at all, may it be punctuated with laughter and mirth enough to keep that good-natured wit of yours honed to the keenness that it was when you were here. Rest, Captain Morelli.
