Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom Griffin on June 21, 2005:

Cannot believe this wonderful human being has left us. From the time we met so many years ago he was always the same Bob. Kind, generous, sincerely caring with a sense of humor. He loved his Kay and children and grandchildren with all his heart and he took such pride in them. His classmates were always close to his heart and we, in turn, treasured him. His generosity was known to many from his parties here in town as well suites in hotels at reunions. He had the idea of the Holiday Party. There was a committee but Bob and his lovely Kay were the inspiration, prime movers, and directors. They did it all with no desire for recognition... the pleasure came from the pleasure of his classmates and their wives. I was privy to the personal expense that Bob incurred in order to reduce costs for others and, in many instances, just springing for people to come. He lovingly gave and would not hear of thanks. He honestly thought of others first.

When I first returned from overseas in 1991 and took Jane to dinner at the club, a bottle of champagne appeared. Hadn't even noticed that Bob was there.

It is true that he spoke to many classmates as they left the service. I was one. His message was most useful as he sincerely tried to help. I know how much he was concerned about our brethren and sisters who encountered bumps on the road but I also know that I know very little about how much he helped because he quietly did his good works.

And what a sense of humor!!

What a man. If there is a model for how a man should live his life it is Robert Patrick Sullivan.

I miss him very much.
