William R. Crites, Colonel-U. S. Army (Retired) died on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Mission/St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Col Crites is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He also holds graduate degrees from Baylor University and Duke University. Col Crites served his country for 24 years in Germany, Korea, Vietnam (where he was severely wounded and awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart) and numerous U. S. assignments, including as an Instructor of The History of the Military Art at West Point and Project Officer and Clinical Administrator of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D. C.

Col Crites is survived by his wife Narris in Asheville; a son Peter A. Crites and wife Alice of Kensington, Maryland; a daughter Betsy Von Kerens and husband David of Omaha, Nebraska, a brother J. Robert Crites and wife Jean of Hendersonville, N.C., five grandchildren and 14 nieces and nephews. A sister Mary Ellen Fraser of Denver, Colorado, predeceased Col Crites.

A memorial service for Col Crites will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Asheville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Point Class of 1956 Administrative Fund, United States Military Academy-AOG, West Point, New York 10996 or the Capital Fund of First Baptist Church of Asheville, 5 Oak Street, Asheville, N.C. 28801.
