Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mike Tatu on May 15, 2012:

BG Kirk was a truly inspirational Armor Officer - I served with him twice - he was my Brigade Commander (1st AD) in Germany and then my ADC(M) (5th Mech) at Fort Polk. The Reforger operation he planned and pulled off was truly remarkable and he based it on the Battle of Vicksburg - we had a diversion force move all night within earshot of the other units and in the dead of night, Col Kirk moved the entire brigade much further south and crossed the river at dusk - by 8AM we had surrounded and bypassed the division we were facing - their guns still facing across the river at our diversionary force. Ever the teacher, Col Kirk then explained to the officers and NCOs the entire operation and how he had based it on military history. Many of the officers in that brigade went on to command Battalions and Brigades in the first Gulf War.
