Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Charlene Rogers on July 16, 2011:

When I got the email from my dear friend, Kathy, that her dad had passed away, my heart was heavy for her loss and the void that she and the rest of her family are feeling. Kathy was one of the first people I contacted when my own father passed away more than 20 years ago. One of the reasons she was first on the list is because of her calm and caring nature. Kathy is, and has always been, a solid and loving friend. Her calm demeanor reminds me so much of her dad. I think her dad gave her the gifts of a quiet wisdom, a love for her family, and a fun-loving nature.

I met Col. Barlow when Kathy and I were college roommates. We both transferred to Mary Washington in our sophomore year and immediately bonded when we found out we both had fathers who had careers in the military. Over the years, I was fortunate to spend some time with the Barlows at West Point and at their home in Virginia. I remember Col. Barlow as a man with a sparkle in his eyes, an infectious laugh, a calm and humble demeanor, and wisdom. He also seemed so smart! My fondest memory of Col. Barlow is how he absolutely lit up around his family. You could feel the love he had for his children and Mrs. Barlow.

I know you will miss your dad, grandfather, and husband immeasurably. I hope you will find comfort and peace in all the wonderful memories you hold in your hearts.

Blessings, Charlene
