Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tracie Graham on October 30, 2008:

I learned so much from Bob and now I am fortunate to bask in the success and knowledge that he bestowed upon David Brown, his law partner, best friend and mentor. The following is an excerpt from the speech that David gave at Bob's Memorial Service in Manhattan Beach.

"Bob's accomplishments are too numerous to recount. More important than his accomplishments, is the fact that he believed in living life on the side of the mountain rather than the top of the hill. Bob had no need to recount his accomplishments to others out of pride. His love and caring was open and available to anyone who honestly desired it. He valued all of his friends with a love that was ignorant of social standing or position.

Bob was a great teacher of anyone who desired to take the time to learn from him. Unlike so many teachers, however, Bob had an uncanny ability to empathize with his student. His ability to intuitively understand the feelings of others was a hallmark of his personality." David Brown

I could never put into words how I feel about Bob and what he did for me. David's words resonate with mine.

I will never forget the day that we laid Bob to rest at West Point. It was the saddest, yet proudest day of my life thus far. I felt sad that Bob would be so far away from us in New York, yet so proud that Bob had earned the honor of being interred at West Point. In fact, whenever I think of Bob I feel a tremendous sense of pride. I am proud to have known him, proud to have worked for him, and I am proud to honor him-always.

"O captain, my captain, our fearful trip is done
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting
Exult oh shores, and ring oh bells, but I with mournful tread
Walk the deck my captain lies, fallen cold and dead."
