Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Walter M. Patterson, III on April 4, 2007:

Our best memory with Fred was an enchanting day in Ubud, Bali. My wife and I along with several classmates had taken a side trip to Bali enroute to the Queen's Birthday in Bangkok. We were staying in a hotel up on a high hill overlooking many rice fields and a rushing mountain stream. The view was fantastic - lush and green. On a free sunny morning my wife and I decided to take a walk. Fred joined us. Then he persuaded a houseboy to lead us down through the rice fields, across the river, and up to his village on the far side. Fred asked if we could visit the local elemetary school. We sang for the children. Fred's dancing, singing, and face-making were an instant hit with all the children.

At Fred's suggestion the houseboy took us to visit his home. It was a typical Hindi home with four buildings, each open to the central courtyard. The bedroom building even had an alarm clock. Under the bed was a rooster in a cage! On the return trip by another route we visited a small shrine among the rice fields. We never would have seen all this if Fred hadn't sweet-talked (and paid a dollar to) the houseboy. In his inimitable style, Fred made our day. Fred became one of my wife's favorite classmates at reunions. Now there will be no more "Easley Tours." We shall miss you, Fred.
