Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brig. Gen. R.M. Ong (Ret) on May 28, 2019:

Memorial Day 2019 is a fine occasion to remember my classmate and Companymate Clint Seward.

Clint and I met each other on the first day of Beast Barracks, and we were neighbors for the next 4 years, as members of Company E, 2nd Regiment. During our Senior Year, Clint made Cadet Captain and became our Company Commander.

To match his outstanding leadership abilities, Clint was an academic genius as well as a superior athlete (intercollegiate wrestling). This was one guy whom we knew, would be destined for great achievements.

Yes, we were soon aware of Clint's brawn and brains, but what we envied most of all was his ability to date one of the prettiest ladies to visit West Point, a head-turner named Mary Anne. Many years later, I found out that he did marry that girl after all. Smart move!

Clint and I said our goodbyes on Graduation Day and we went on our separate ways. He joined the US Air Force, while I joined the Philippine Army. We lost touch with each other, until I had retired and discovered that newfangled invention called the Internet. We soon made contact and caught up with each other's lives.

As soon as I learned about his interest in Higher Physics, I introduced him to a Filipino physicist classmate of mine at MIT, and the two of them soon became fast friends. I can only imagine how those two geniuses enjoyed each other's company.

I was saddened to learn that Clint passed away before he had realized his goals regarding ball lightning and plasma toroids. I can only hope that others will carry his torch of discovery.

I shall miss this guy and think about him very often. And now my final salute to a fine classmate, a true genius and a great leader. Well done! Be thou at peace, amigo!
