Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James E Daniels on March 18, 2005:

I roomed with Bob Yearling year and always felt close to him, in part because he had had a difficult childhood and in part because he was such a good person. When he relaxed he had a delightful sense of humor and was generous and giving. He was a terror to plebes but he really did care about them and about their success as cadets. He was never petty in his approach to discipline and he always held himself to the highest standards of conduct in everything he did. He was fiercely competitive and was into physical fitness, even though team sports was not something he enjoyed. I think that came because he was one of the first eye contact users I knew and this was when they were made of glass and covered most of the eye ball. Full contact sports would have represented a real risk for him.

Bob harbored strong feelings about his family history and they showed through in his dealings with others. His stern, even angry, appearance put some people off but it was not who he really was. I knew him as a caring person who struggled in trying to establish relationships with others. His mix of personal integrity, strength of character and his willingness to help others earned him a special place in my memories and a strong affection that still persists after 40 years.
