Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Paul Poetto on July 3, 2015:

I entered New York Military Academy with Robert Vogel in September of 1955. He served as a "new guy" like me but his rise in rank was meteoric. Almost unheard of as he achieved officer rank during his second or third year. His senior year he was "First Captain" of the corp of cadets. There were 500 of us. I can still hear Bob's stentorian tones calling the entire corp to TEN HUT! during mass battalion assemblies. Every one knew Bob through his military type of bearing as a teenager because we all wanted to be like him. During our senior year we were all so proud of him especially when the public was present for our Sunday afternoon parades. He typified what it was to be a cadet in the corps. Bob made us want to be something larger than ourselves. On graduation day on June 6, 1959 Bob's chest was so filled with the medals he had earned there was no room for all of them. There was a void to fill when Bob left campus on that day. Proud to have known you and to have shared prep school with you. Rest in peace.
