Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bill Patterson on January 23, 2022:

Yesterday I found a letter he wrote in 1991 about wanting to work in Cambodia after retirement. It prompted me to write this Eulogy. Bob gave me the up close and personal tour of front lines around Phnom Penh in 1973. I was working for BG John Cleland and never got out. I remember he took the time to get me out to look around. Two times in particular. We went to the perimeter to south to look at Khmer Rouge bunker (occupied). Bob was calm and pointed the complex out as the FANK shot 40mm round at the bunker and then dropped a 60mm mortar round on it. The bunker was about 40 yards away and fragments from the mortar hit the tree above our heads. He was always calm. Second was to the north racing his MEDTC jeep across a paddy dike before a machine gunner could wake up. He knew where the machine gun was and knew when we would be out of sight. Very adventurous. He always had a great attitude, was curious and open minded. A great person. Well Done Bob.
