Akos Dezso Szekely

West Point, 1964

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG RM Ong (Ret) on October 3, 2013:

I was Akos' upperclassman at West Point and we spent three years together. I learned about his rough life in Hungary under the Soviet occupation forces and how he came to the USA. As a Cadet, he impressed me with his exceptional intellect and his athletic prowess. He was an outstanding performer in the cross country course and the track oval.

He was a good actor too and played a key role in the traditional 100th Nite Show that the Cadets put out every year. I knew that West Point had a winner when I saw this guy with letters on his jacket and stars on his uniform. I was saddened to learn many, many years later that his life had ended so soon after graduation.

I was stationed in Vietnam with the Philippine Army troops at about the same time that Akos was serving there, but our paths never did cross. So long, pal, you would have made a great General or even more, but you became only one of the many heroes of your country.
