Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Perryman on June 11, 2015:

It was not possible to be a member of the class of '64 and not know Dwayne -- he had smarts, athleticism, command presence -- and a voice that could call the Supe to attention....

After graduation, we both ended up in Germany and met in Oberammergau learning to put atomic demolitions together.

After his time in the Army, we met again in Orange County, California, where he was in charge of port construction operations for LA and Long Beach. While on duty there he was called up one morning early due to the minor inconvenience of a Russian sub entering the harbor. As many of us have figured out from our plebe year class in ES&GS, The LA harbor is not too far from Hollywood. Yes, someone had towed a prop for "The Hunt for Red October" into a parking spot by the Coast Guard Station.

We shared many Founder's Days together with Dwayne and Nan and celebrated our 50th birthdays at a local restaurant. Nan could not resist and brought us all an invitation to join AARP.

After Dwayne and Nan moved to North Carolina and Angie and I moved to Tucson, we had the pleasure of a visit from the Lee's, who were swinging through on a western road trip.

Obviously there are many great memories of Dwanye as a cadet, officer, and a family man that many of us share. Beside having enjoyed the pleasure of his company, I'd like to close by observing that I have never met anyone who lived his values more than Dwayne. God speed old friend.
